People had been waiting almost 30 years for driving a BMW roadster which was launched in October 1988. The first surprise concerns the retractable doors. They slid forward into the front fenders. As stated by BMW, once you get in the car, you will immediately experience a “new drive dimension”. Starting from the cabin, you can admire a number of innovative features such as the functional equipment or continuously zinc welded seams.
To render the interior parts even more attractive, you can find other features such as the passengers’ reclining seats or the considerable use of leather concerning the steering wheel, the knob, the lateral panels, the glove compartment or the dashboard upholstery.
The entire vehicle was designed with aerodynamics in mind. In fact, The Z1 has a drag coefficient of 0.36 Cd with the top up or 0.43 Cd with it down. In order to obtain a higher performance and innovation many parts of the body was made from plastic and could be removed completely from the chassis. Moreover, the BMW Z1 was one of the first automobiles to use the lenticular headlights as well as integrated roll-bars.
But the great peculiarity of this vehicle is represented by the doors which electrically retract down into the car's body instead of swinging outward or upward.
The exclusivity of this German two-seat roadster automobile is above all the underbody tray granting an excellent rotational stiffness. Another peculiarity lies in the composite material platform granting less weight (only15 kg), and a higher load carrying capacity. This characteristic together with big side members allows to increase the rotational stiffness as well as the passengers’ safety.
The vehicle is green on the outside fitted with cream leather upholstery on the inside. 967 units out of 8.000 were produced with this color combination. It is original in all its parts and has covered only 50000 km.
