Sant’Agostino is honored to present an extraordinary auction of paintings and sculptures spanning centuries—from the Ancient to the Contemporary—featuring masterworks by artists who have indelibly shaped the course of Italian and international art.

We will begin with a beautiful tempera by Carlo Bossoli, who paints with delicacy, richness of detail, and topographical precision: “Moscow. Red Square” (1857). The artist created the painting during one of his last great journeys through northern countries and central Europe. The everyday scene in the square was described by Ada Peyrot as “a poetic scene”: it is set in a bright afternoon, where the colors of mosaics and gold shine, narrating a historical reality bordering on the representation of a fantastical and distant world.

We will then continue with two cornerstones of international art history: “Still Life with Mandolin and Sheet Music” by George Braque and “La dame à la guitare” dated 29/3/1939 by Henri Matisse.

In "The Monster Who Licks the Statue", Tancredi ParmiggianiA533;at the height of his most intense and visionary periodA533;creates a painting in which line and color define an autonomous, vibrant, and unpredictable universe.
The central figure, the "monster" with an almost childlike face, emerges from blue and orange glazes, drips, and flashes of light, oscillating between irony and anxiety. All around, the pictorial gesture unfolds in nervous lines and dynamic movements
that, though seemingly random, construct a balanced and perceptually intense composition. The surface does more than simply represent: it translates, through the rhythm of the marks and the chromatic modulations, the artist's inner tension, suspended between narrative impulse and lyrical abstraction.
The use of tempera on canvas paper accentuates the vibrant quality of the color and the fluidity of the gestures: the layered layers, drips, and glazes produce effects of unstable depth, lending the painting an almost autonomous vitality. The chromatic material becomes the protagonist, animating the scene and engaging the viewer in a perceptual experience in which every detailA533;from the color contrasts to the subtlest strokesA533;contributes to a complex and fascinating visual rhythm.
Tancredi (Feltre, 1927-Rome, 1964), one of the most original figures of postwar Italy, was a student of Arturo
Martini and, for a time, close to Peggy Guggenheim's circle. He soon developed a personal
language, characterized by floating lines, suspended atmospheres, and sudden bursts of color. This painting from 1959-60, created shortly before the personal crisis that would mark his life, reveals the conflict between form and dissolution, reality and vision: an unstable equilibrium that remains a constant feature of his poetics. The work demonstrates Tancredi's ability to transform the pictorial surface into an emotional and contemplative space, where color, line, and gesture interact with the viewer's sensibility,
making painting a living and immediate experience.
